Dr. Irina Bezsonova publishes paper of the week.
Dr. Bezsonova's paper entitled "Solution NMR Structure of the DNA-binding Domain from Scml2 (Sex Comb on Midleg-like 2)" was chosen as the paper of the week in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. This honor is reserved for the top 2% of manuscripts reviewed. [more info]
Dr. Peter Setlow presents Journal of Applied Microbiology lecture.
When the Sleepers Wake: The Germination of bacterial spores with guest speaker Peter Setlow. This year's Journal of Applied Microbiology lecture was presented by Peter Setlow, Distinguished Professor of Molecular, Microbial and Structural Biology, University of Connecticut Health Center. Save the date: Peng Memorial Lecture 2013
The Peng Memorial Lecture 2013 is scheduled for Monday, February 11. The 2013 Peng Laureate will be Dr. Peter S. Kim, President of Merck Research Laboratories. As in past years, there will be a gala fundraising dinner to support the Peng Research Fund the evening of the 11th, with Dr. Kim as guest of honor.
Save the Date -- November 15-16, 2013 for the next MMSB Departmental Retreat
We will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of the MMSB Department in the Fall of 2013. To celebrate, we are planning an overnight retreat. It will be held November 15-16, 2013 at an Inn called Interlaken in Lakeville. Details will follow.
Dr. Sandra Weller Elected Vice President of CASE
Congratulations to Sandra Weller who has been elected vice president/president elect of the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering (CASE) for a term beginning July 1, 2012.
Dr. Weller will be the first woman to serve as both vice president and president of the Academy. She was originally elected to the Academy in 1999. [more info]
Dr. Casillas-Martinez wins Carski Award
Dr. Lilliam Casillas-Martinez, former student of Drs. Peter and Barbara Setlow, is the recipient of the 2012 Carski Foundation Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award. [more info]
2nd Annual Peng Lecture
The 2nd Annual Peng Lecture will be held on Monday, November 7th, at 4 PM, in the Cell and Genome Sciences Lecture Hall, 400 Farmington Avenue. A reception will follow. Dr. Asis Das receives Osborn Award
Congratulations to Dr. Asis Das for receiving the Osborn Biomedical Science Graduate Teaching Award.
UCHC receives HEI grant for 800 MHz Spectrometer
The UCONN Health Center has received a $2 million federal grant to purchase an 800 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer for use in the Gregory P. Mullen NMR Structural Biology Facility. The grant is one of only 14 provided by the NIH NCRR High End Instrumentation Program. UCONN Advance [more info]
Dr. Sandra Weller named Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor
The Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor is the university’s highest academic honor, awarded to faculty who have achieved exceptional distinction in scholarship, teaching and service. [more info]

Dr. Peter Setlow receives Osborn Award
Congratulations to Dr. Peter Setlow for receiving the Osborn Biomedical Science Graduate Teaching Award.
Dr. Peter Setlow elected for Honorary membership in the Society for Applied Microbiology.
Dr. Peter Setlow was elected for Honorary membership in the Society for Applied Microbiology (based in the UK), and was inducted at their summer conference in Edinburgh in July. Honorary Membership is conferred on persons of distinction in the field of applied microbiology.

MMSB Department celebrated its second anniversary in October, 2005.
Mass Spec Purchased
In September, an ABI MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometer was purchased which will be up and running soon for MMSB use. Stay tuned for details on how to get trained to use it.
Dr. Peter Setlow named Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor

MMSB Faculty awarded 18 new Research Grants in the past year.
A good year for grants: 18 new grants have been awarded for a total of $3,527,864 direct cost grant dollars (up from $2,327,932 direct cost grant dollars in the previous year).
Dr. Betty Eiper named Watkins Visiting Professor
Dr. Betty Eiper has been awarded the Watkins Visiting Professorship by Wichita State University.
Ten Graduate Students recieved their Ph.D. degrees in the past year.
