Faculty Openings

The Department of Molecular, Microbial, and Structural Biology at the University of Connecticut Health Center announces a reopened search for a faculty candidate in the general area biomolecular NMR. Appointment will be at the academic rank of associate or full professor, and a record of scholarship commensurate with tenure is requisite. The Department has outstanding facilities to support biophysical studies, including the Gregory P. Mullen NMR Structural Biology Facility with 400, 500, 600, and 800 (newly funded) MHz spectrometers and a Biophysical Core. The UConn Program for Excellence in Structural Biology supports inter-campus collaboration between the Health Center and Storrs campuses, which provides access to analytic ultracentrifugation (in the National Analytical Ultracentrifuge Facility at Storrs). Additional established strengths at the Health Center include The Center for Cell Analysis and Modeling (CCAM) and clinical/research Signature Programs in Musculoskeletal Medicine, Cardiovascular Biology, and Cancer. The successful candidate is expected to maintain a vigorous, nationally recognized and externally funded research program that complements the collegial and collaborative environment of the Department. Research/Staff Positions

Purpose:At the UCHC this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks for assigned research projects, programs or segments. This position will work to develop signal processing software for biomolecular NMR spectroscopy. Analyzes and prepares feasibility studies of applications for batch and on-line systems development; evaluates alternative methods of problem resolution; designs specifications for problem resolution through computer application; prepares programs for solutions of moderate to complex problems from rough notes, records, statements and/or other information; prepares program specifications for other programmers; designs forms and prepares record and file layouts; assists in design and layout of data base areas required by responsible systems; tests and debugs system programs; assists in preparation of operational run sheets, user manuals, and documentation; provides consultation, training, and program coordination for users; helps study procedural difficulties and operating problems and prepares advice for administrative personnel on their solution; related duties.
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:Considerable knowledge of principles, problems, techniques of batch/on-line programming; considerable knowledge of computer operation systems; knowledge and understanding of business organization and fundamentals; knowledge of principles of system analysis and design; knowledge of data base file organization/access capabilities; skill in using computer languages and software; oral and written communications skills; interpersonal skills; ability to develop programs; ability to prepare user/system documentation.
Experience, Training:Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or the physical or mathematical sciences and one year relevant experience.
Special Skills:Competent with FORTRAN, C and Unix shell(s)
Preferred Skills:Experience with scientific subroutine libraries such as Numerical Recipes and BLAS; familiarity with graphical APIs, such as OpenGL and X11.
Schedule:40 hours, generally Monday - Friday, schedule to be determined. Some flexibility necessary to accommodate research needs.
Salary:$47,501
